Biography

Jaime R. Villablanca is a neuroscientist who has served in the UCLA School of Medicine faculty since he joined the Departments of Anatomy and Psychiatry in 1971. He became full professor in 1976 and he currently holds the title of Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Psychiaytry and Biobehavioral Sciences and of Neurobiology. Dr. Villablanca earned his B.S. in Biology at the University of Chile and his M.D. at the School of Medicine, University of Chile. He was a posdoctoral fellow at the Johns Hopskins School of Medicine (physiology) and at Harvard University Medical School (neurology).He has been a member of a number of UCLA Senate Committees, including the Council on Academic Personnel. Dr. Villablanca is recipient of an UCLA School of Medicine Lifetime Scientific Award and of a number of international awards including the competitive internationa Reina Sofia Award (Spain). For the last 20 years his laboratory research has centered on brain neuroplasticity following perinatal brain injury, but during the first 15 years of his career his main reserch field was on the functional neuroanatomy of sleep-waking, for which he received an Award as a Significant Early Contributor from the Sleep Research Society. -------------------------------------------
