Would you like to be a part of one of the most exciting all-green 
development projects taking place in California?  If so, you might
 be the California Academy of Sciences' new Archives and Digital 
Collections Librarian.  We have challenges galore for a fast 
learning, high energy person who wants to be a significant player 
as we move into our new $484 million facility in Golden
Gate Park.   
 
POSITION SUMMARY:  Reporting to the Academy Librarian, 
oversee all aspects of the Academy's special collections 
from archives to video to photographic images including the 
care and organization of the collections, providing reference 
assistance to users, and ensuring that the Academy follows best 
practices and is in compliance with the relevant standards set forth 
by the American Library Association and the American Association 
of Museums.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Manage the archival program of the California Academy of Sciences 
including evaluating, acquiring, arranging, describing, preserving 
and providing access to the non-book materials (special collections) 
of the Academy library.
* Provide reference services to users of the Academy's special 
collections in person, over the Web, by mail and e-mail, and 
over the telephone.
* Continue the effort to obtain and make accessible oral 
histories from curators and other Academy staff.
* Supervise (train and evaluate) three staff members 
including the Manzanita Project librarian, the Special 
Collections library assistant, and the digital production assistant.
* Participate in the evaluation of materials for digitization 
and oversee preparation of materials to be digitized.
* Work proactively with development staff to both evaluate 
potential gifts and to identify and secure funding for 
archival processing and digitization projects.
* Promote awareness of and use of archival and digital collections 
within the Academy and externally.
* Follow all Academy safety regulations.
* Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual 
must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in 
librarianship from a degree program accredited by the 
American Library Association or a master's degree in archival 
studies.  Minimum of 3 years of professional experience working 
with archival or special collections.  Minimum of 2 years of 
supervisory experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

* Understanding of the basic history, theory and 
professional practices related to archives, manuscripts, 
photographs, slides, audiovisual media and digital materials.
* Familiarity with archival and library preservation issues 
and developments and the proper handling of primary source 
materials in all formats.
* Ability to interact and communicate successfully and to 
sustain effective working relationships with a wide range of 
people including colleagues within and outside the library 
as well as donors and donor prospects. 
* Evidence of successful supervisory experience and 
the ability to manage a small staff (training, supervising 
and evaluating).
* Excellent analytic problem-solving and organizational skills.
* Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and 
effectively both as a team member and independently.
* Knowledge of digital formats and standards.
* Experience and facility with Macromedia Dreamweaver, 
Adobe PhotoShop, Microsoft Access, MS Office suite.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  
Ability to read and interpret documents 
such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, 
and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  
Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.

work environment described here are representative of those 
that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the 
essential functions of this job.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:  Salary is commensurate with experience. 
This is a full-time position. This position is eligible for 
excellent medical & dental benefits; as well as participation 
in a supplemental retirement annuity and flexible spending accounts.
