Journal of the History of the Neurosciences:
Basic and Clinical Perspectives
HISTNEUR-L: The History of Neuroscience Internet Forum
The International Society for the History of the Neurosciences (ISHN) was founded in Montreal on May 14, 1995. Its mission is to:
- improve communication between individuals and groups interested in the history of neuroscience;
- promote research in the history of neuroscience; and
- promote education in and stimulate interest for the history of neuroscience.
The Journal of
the History of the Neurosciences: Basic and Clinical Perspectives,
the official organ of the
society, is published by Taylor & Francis. Now in its eighteenth year (2009),
publishing four issues per volume, the
Journal provides a forum for investigations in the field of neuroscience
history, as broadly defined, including the history of basic, clinical, and
behavioral neurosciences, ancient and non-western topics, and significant
individuals, events, and technical advances. ISHN is a focal point for
those interested in neuroscience history and offers, through its journal
and annual meeting, opportunities to contribute to this rapidly growing
field.

HISTNEUR-L: The History of Neuroscience Internet Forum is an electronic
discussion group for exchanging information on any aspect of the History of
Neuroscience. It includes announcements, inquiries and discussion on access
to historical sources and their use and interpretation. Subscriptions are free and available to
everyone interested in neuroscience history, including but by no means limited to historians,
scientists, students, instructors, curators, publishers, archivists and librarians. The listserv is
maintained for the benefit of the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences (ISHN),
but is open to all (anyone with an e-mail account and an interest in the subject is welcomed).
The 2008 ISHN meeting in Berlin was a great success, for which the organizers are to be congratulated,
and the the quality of presented papers and posters continues to rise from meeting to meeting.
The most important news to emerge from the meeting:
- Sherry Ginn, as incoming President, introduced members to details of the
next ISHN meeting. It will be held in Charleston (South Carolina, USA) between 16 and 20 June 2009.
- Marjorie Lorch (Birkbeck College, University of London) was elected as
Sherry Ginn's successor. As President Elect she will oversee the organization of the
2010 ISHN meeting which, at the invitation of the Club d'Histoire des Neurosciences (CHN),
will be held in Paris (France). The CHN, founded in 2005, was strongly represented in Berlin
by a series of high quality presentations. Laurie Swann was re-elected (unopposed) as
Secretary of the ISHN.
- Two ISHN prizes were awarded at the banquet, held in the "Virchow Ruine" in the
grounds of the Charité hospital:
- The award for Outstanding Student Essay in the History
of the Neurosciences (2005-2007) was presented to
Emily Phillips (who unfortunately could not attend the meeting) for
her dissertation "Sir James Crichton-Browne and the Theory of
Degeneration: A study in the positive applications of a pessimistic idea"
(MA, Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL, 2006).
- The award for Outstanding Book in the History of the Neurosciences was presented to
Laura Otis for her monograph, Müller's Lab (Oxford University Press, 2007).
(News reported by Paul Foley, who recorded minutes at the 2008 annual meeting)
