Invitation and Call for Papers for
MAC
The Mid-Atlantic Conference
In the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology
July 31-August 2, 1998
at
The Johns Hopkins University
********************************************************************************
Dear Colleagues,
We at Johns Hopkins invite you to join us at a conference of graduate
students from the Mid-Atlantic region interested in the History of
Science, Medicine, and Technology. The basic purpose of this conference
is to foster collegial interaction between the graduate students of the
many fine programs in the History of Science (writ large) in this
region.
The conference will begin Friday evening, July 31 with a welcoming
dinner/party. Saturday, August 1 will be devoted to paper presentations
and discussion, with papers being the usual 20-25 minutes in length. As a
primary goal of this conference is for the participants to get some useful
feedback on their work, and not just another line on their c.v., 10-15
minutes will be set aside for discussion of each paper. A free luncheon
and coffee breaks will provide periodic breathing spells, and we will
organize some entertainment for the evening.
For those who wish to stay for Sunday, we have something more unusual in
mind: several "working sessions" devoted to the constructive criticism of
works longer than the typical conference paper. Each working session will
consist of 45 minutes to an hour of discussion of an article-length piece
of work, such as a dissertation chapter, job talk, or, of course, an
article-to-be. The papers for the working sessions (as well as the
abstracts for the talks on Saturday) will be made available in advance via
the conference website:
http://www.med.jhu.edu/gradweb/history_of_science/MAC.html
It is our goal to make this conference as productive--and as
inexpensive!!--for the attendees as possible. We will be glad to put up
visiting students, and we will provide dinner Friday and lunch Saturday
free of charge. It is also our hope that this conference will become an
annual event, with a different insitution serving as host each year.
DEADLINES: Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words (if for a
talk) or no more than 500 words (if for a working session) to us by MAY
15. Abstracts may be submitted electronically to
hheyck@jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu, or you may submit them by mail to:

hesitate to get in touch with us.
We hope you will join us!!
Sincerely,
