" For those of you planning to fly to the ISHN meeting in Annapolis, Maryland
this coming June, here is some information that might be of help. There are
3 airports in the general vicinity, one in Baltimore and two in Washington,
D.C. Annapolis itself does not have a commercial airport and so you will
have to make arrangements to get from "BWI", "National" or "Dulles"
airports to Annapolis. Taxis are going to be expensive since the distance
to Annapolis is on the order of 50-65 miles, ranging from BWI (closest) to
Dulles (farthest). There is a Greyhound bus service from Washington to
Annapolis once a day, leaving at 6pm, arriving at 6:40pm. There is probably
Greyhound service from Baltimore to Annapolis, too, but I haven't yet
checked it out. There may be other bus services that I don't know about.
There are two providers of limousine services at the airports, one from BWI
and the other from National or Dulles; these two are: the Airport Shuttle
and Carey:

Car rental.
All three airports of course have a complete complement of car rental
agencies. The drive to Annapolis from any of these airports is pretty well
marked with highway signs. Until you actually get into the city area of
Annapolis, all the highways are expressways with four to eight lanes (there
is a fair amount of traffic in this region....). If you are driving, when
you get to the signs pointing to Annapolis, head for the "city center" or
"dock" or "harbor" area of Annapolis; the Marriott hotel is in the center
of Annapolis on the waterfront in the harbor and once you are at the
harbor, it is extremely easy to find. On the other hand, getting from the
main highway to the harbor in Annapolis is a bit of a nuisance -- the roads
are narrow and many are one-way. On the plus side: it is very scenic. And
of course everyone you meet will know the direction.
Do you need a car? All during the meeting, you will _not_ need a car
unless for some reason you wanted to leave Annapolis. Most of the
restaurants, shops and historical buildings of Annapolis are all within an
easy walk of the Marriott hotel. "Easy walk" means 5 to15 minutes at a slow
pace. There is one nice restaurant across the harbor, but even that is a
pleasant 30-40 minute stroll along the waterfront and over a bridge. On the
other hand, before or after the meeting, if you are thinking about
exploring Washington, D.C. or perhaps the Chesapeake Bay region, you will
be happier with a rental car than with public transportation.
My suggestion: use public transportation to get to the Marriott hotel and
walk everywhere during the meeting; only rent a car if you are extending
your trip and planning on visiting places other than Annapolis.
Which airport? If you have a choice of airports, either BWI or National are
the closest to Annapolis and thus the limousines will be cheapest from
them. Personally I find BWI a pleasant airport and National to be a crowded
mess, but they both function. If you don't have to fly into Dulles, then
don't; the airport is very nice but it is quite a ways out in the
countryside west of Washington, D.C. (Annapolis is east of Washington, D.C.).
Hope you like seafood. The Chesapeake Bay area rivals the Maine coast for
the quality of its seafood, particularly crabs and oysters.
