Forwarded from "CADUCEUS-L: History of the Health Sciences Forum"

Please note the short deadline: 31 March 1998. [My apologies for the
delay in cross-posting this; I'm just now getting to clearing up a
large backlog in my email files.] Note also the focus of this

JOHN J. PISANO TRAVEL GRANTS AT THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH

BACKGROUND
The John J. Pisano Travel Grants are administered through the DeWitt
Stetten, Jr., Museum of Medical Research at the National Institutes of
Health (NIH) for the purpose of encouraging historical research relating to
the NIH intramural programs. The grants are named in honor of Dr. John J.
Pisano (1929-1985), a distinguished biochemist and former chief of the
Section on Physiological Chemistry, Laboratory of Chemistry, National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute. The program is funded by the John J. Pisano
Memorial Fund of the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences,
Inc., a non-federal organization associated with the NIH.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE AWARDS
The Pisano grants will be awarded for travel costs to Bethesda, Maryland, to
conduct historical research relating to the NIH intramural programs. For
information about the history of the NIH and its intramural programs, the
NIH Historical Office maintains a bibliography available on the World Wide
Web at http://www.nih.gov/od/museum/nihbib.htm. General information about
the 25 Institutes, Centers, and Divisions of the NIH is also available on
the NIH Web site at http://www.nih.gov. Questions may be addressed to the
NIH Historian, Dr. Victoria A. Harden, at 301-496-6610;
vharden@helix.nih.gov; or at the address to which applications should be
sent (see below). Recipients are required to acknowledge the award in any
publication resulting from the research supported and to furnish the Stetten
Museum with one copy of any article or book resulting from the support.

SIZE AND FREQUENCY OF AWARDS
One or two grants each year are expected to be available at the level of
$1,500 for United States residents and $2,000 for recipients who reside
outside the United States. This will be a lump sum award. Recipients are
responsible for making all arrangements for travel to and accommodations in
Bethesda. There are no additional funds for expenses.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applicants must submit by mail (regular or express) one copy of a narrative
description of the proposed project, not to exceed 1500 words, excluding
references, explaining the research and what aspect of it will be assisted
by the ability to travel to the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. Applicants must
also submit a curriculum vitae and one supporting letter from a referee
qualified to comment on the scholarly merit of the proposal. Applications
for an award during the 1998-99 academic year must be received in the NIH
Historical Office by 5:00 p.m. EST on 31 March 1998. They should addressed
