I have dealt in detail( with many citations not yet mentioned to
the primary and secondary literature) with the following topics being
discussed: Greek views on the brain and heart from Alcmaeon thru the
Hippocratics, Plato and Aristotle, then the Alexandrians and finally
Galen, medieval ventricular theory, Willis on animals and cortex and
related topics and the reverberations of these debates into the 19th
century in the following publications:
Gross, C.G. Early History of Neuroscience, In: G. Adelman
(Ed.), Encyclopedia of Neuroscience. Boston: Birkhauser, 1987, pp.
843-846. [This is brief and superficial without refs but it gives the
basic story]
Gross, C.G. The hippocampus minor and mans place in
nature. Hippocampus, 1993, 3: 403-415. [An example of the influence of
ventricular theory into the late 19th century]
Gross, C.G. Aristotle on the brain. The Neuroscientist,
1995, 1: 245-250.[Including other Greek views on the brain with citations
to , I believe every relevant place in Aristotle]
Gross, C.G. Leonardo daVinci on the brain and eye. The Neuroscientist,
1997, 3:347-354. [Note here the variations in ventricular doctrine]
Gross, C.G., Galen and the squealing pig. The Neuroscientist, scheduled to
appear in next issue [deals with Galens fight with the stoics over brain
function]
Gross, C.G. From Imhotep to Hubel and Wiesel: The story of
visual cortex. In: J.H. Kaas, K. Rockland, and A. Peters (Eds.), Cerebral
Cortex, Vol. 13: Extrastriate Cortex. NY: Plenum, ..if its not out yet it
should be in few weeks [deals in detail with all issues in this
discussion]
Gross, C.G. Brain, Vision, Memory: Tales in the History of
Neuroscience. Cambridge: MIT Press, in press. .the publisher just told
me in will be out before April 1..deals with all issue discussed
If anybody cant wait for the last two, assuming they are not out
yet...if you write me Ill send you a preprint or extracts...until they are
gone..I still have reprints of the Aristole and Leonardo articles and
preprints of the Galen.
