i am working on a paper on meynert's views on aphasia. wernicke was allowed
to visit meynert for half a year in 1874 and published a little book on
aphasia. trying to find out the details i ran into a surprising problem.
the cases described in wernicke 1874 apparently all were seen in the
Allerheiligen Hospital in Breslau, during the period from october 1873 until
may 1874. the book was published in Breslau, with a Foreword, dated Breslau,
may. Do we have to conclude from this that Wernicke visited Meynert in 1873
or earlier, and that he did his research and writing in Breslau, without the
supervision of Meynert?
In books on 19th century medical history in vienna, i can hardly find
wernicke mentioned (e.g. erna lesky: the vienna medical school of the 19th
century; johnston: the austrian mind; stockert-meynert: theodor meynert und
seine zeit). also eggert, with a detailed description of wernicke's works on
aphasia, does not give any details of wernicke's visit to vienna.
does anybody know a source, where i might find something about this?
thanks
