Dear Paul,
Proprioception or proprio-ception is a term usually attributed to Sherrington,
but others, including Bastian, worked on it. I think Ed Jones has a good paper
on the concept and I'll try to find it for you. I also have a chapter on
Sherrington for my book and will look for Sherrington's references there. I'll
get back to you in a day or two.
