Announcement: ISHN 2nd Annual Meeting (Leiden, 1997)

ANNOUNCEMENT

2nd Meeting of the International Society for the
History of the Neurosciences (ISHN)

and

6th Meeting of the European Club on the
History of Neurology (ECHN)

June 20 - 21 1997
Leiden, The Netherlands

Commemorating Jacobus Schroeder van der Kolk (1797 - 1862)

Leiden became an important city in the 13th century due to
cloth manufacturing; in the 17th century it became the
second largest Dutch city and Europe's most important textile
producer. Leiden is a typical university city with an ancient
center, where you'll find many museums, including the
National Archeological Museum, the National Museum for
Ethnology, the Cloth-house (gallery) and the Boerhaave
Museum for the History of Science and Medicine. There are
many historical buildings such as the weigh-house, several
gates and churches, and you will enjoy the Hortus Botanicus
near the ancient Academy Building.

Leiden is situated within half an hour's reach of Amsterdam,
Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and the North-Sea. The first
university of the Netherlands was founded here (1575). It is
the city where Herman Boerhaave taught in the beginning of
the 18th century. Many famous 'doctores medicinae' were
teachers of this university (Franciscus Sylvius, Pieter Pauw,
Bernhard Siegfried Albinus, Hieronymus David Gaubius),
or pupils, including Nicolaas Tulp, Jan Swammerdam,
Jacobus Bontius, Willem Piso (the latter two were pioneers
in tropical medicine) Gerard van Swieten, Anton de Haen,
Albrecht von Haller, Carl Linnaeus, and Monro (primus).
Descartes matriculated and published his "Discours de la
methode" (1737) in Leiden.
