1st Ittingen Summer School: The Cunning of Science

July 24th 2004 -July 31st 2004

The Collegium Helveticum of the Swiss Institute of Technology (ETH), the
Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science of Tel Aviv
University, and the Center for Junior Research Fellows of the University of
Konstanz, in cooperation with the Lion Foundation, are organizing a summer
school on the topic "The Cunning of Science" in a beautiful old monastery in
Switzerland.

The Summer School aims to examine a variety of scientific practices,
focusing on cunning as a necessary but dangerous part of the search for
scientific truth. Among the topics to be addressed are: scientific
misconduct, strategy in psychological experiments, the uses of placebos in
medical research, and the agency of scientific objects.

[http://www.tau.ac.il/humanities/cohn/staff/Rivka-Feldhay.html] Rivka
Feldhay of the Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science, Tel
Aviv University, is scientific director of the Summer School. The main
speakers are: José Brunner, Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of
Science and Faculty of Law, Tel Aviv University; Ulrike Felt, Institut für
Wissenschaftstheorie und Wissenschaftsforschung der Universität Wien; John
Forrester, Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of
Cambridge: Dieter Lorenz, Fachbereich Rechtswissenschaft, Universität
Konstanz: Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, Max Planck Institute for the History of
Science, Berlin.

The Summer School is a one-week intensive workshop (July 24 - July 31, 2004),
which requires active participation; including preparatory readings, small
group discussions, and the presentation of short papers. The participants
will stay in the hotel of the Kartause Ittingen and receive free
accommodation and full board. Travel costs of European participants will be
covered in full; those of North American participants can only be covered in
part. All material necessary for the preparation of the Summer School, as
well as the cultural program during the School, is free.

The Summer School welcomes applications from doctoral and post-doctoral
students from all academic disciplines in the natural, social and human
sciences. Applications should include a CV and a brief letter (500 words)
detailing current research interests, as well as the reason for wanting to
take part in the Summer School. Applications must be sent by April 30, 2004
to:
application@summerschool-ittingen.ch
All applicants will be notified after May 15, 2004.
