"Agnosia," from "a" and "gnosis" (knowledge) literally means "lack of knowledge"
and was used by Hippocrates in this sense. Now it is used as meaning the loss of
the capacity to recognize the significance of sensory stimuli. Therefore the varieties
distinguished are: auditory, visual, olfactory, gustatory and tactile.
