ISHN Outstanding Student Essay 2004



ISHN 2004 Award for Outstanding Student Essay in the History of the
Neurosciences

In order to promote and recognize outstanding and original scholarship,
the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences (ISHN)
will award a biennial prize to the author of an exceptional unpublished
essay based on original research in the history of the neurosciences.
The Prize is intended for younger scholars or recent entrants into the
profession. This prize will be awarded at ISHN annual meetings held in
even-numbered years.

It was first presented at the ISHN meeting in Los Angeles, California,
1-5 June 2002 to Paul Bernard Foley for his doctoral thesis (University
of Wurtzburg), Beans, Roots, and Leaves: A History of the
Pharmacological Therapy of Parkinsonism.

General Rules: 
- Use of published and unpublished primary material is
strongly encouraged, and full and correct use of scholarly apparatus
(e.g. footnotes or other form of referencing) is expected. 7 Essays must
be fully documented, typewritten with double-line spacing. There is no
restriction on the language of the publication. It may be a thesis or
dissertation. 
- Essays should have been written by a single student. The
essay prize can only be won by a person who was a student at the time of
the writing of the thesis or essay. 
- The essay should have appeared in a time period no longer than 3 years 
before the year of the award. 
- Papers which were subsequently published prior to the 2004 annual
meeting are not eligible. 
- There are no restrictions on the discipline of a candidate. 
- The essay must be accompanied with a note from the current/former student's 
department certifying that the author is/was a student during the period 
of eligibility. 
- A candidate does not necessarily have to be a member of the ISHN. 
- Nominations may come from anyone; i.e., entries may be submitted either by 
or on behalf of a student. However, nominations from the Chair or 
committee members are not permitted. The Chair maintains the list 
of nominations.

Entries, in the form of two (2) copies of the nominated essay, thesis or
dissertation and a cover letter with documentation of the nominee's
student status, should be sent to the Chair of the ISHN Awards and
Prizes Committee:
