Dear Friends:

The staff of University of Chicago Press are pleased to announce a new book
prize in honor of our treasured colleague Susan E. Abrams. The official
announcement of the prize follows.

Editorial Director

The Susan Elizabeth Abrams Prize in History of Science

The Abrams Prize is established in celebration of the innumerable
contributions Susan E. Abrams has made to the history of science, through
her role as editor, mentor, critic, and friend.

The criteria used to award the prize reflect the rigorous standards Susan
E. Abrams has brought to bear on publication within the field: originality,
exceptional scholarship, and well-crafted prose. Winning manuscripts or
books will embrace and elucidate the nature of science as a passion to
discover and understand the natural world, as a disciplined mode of
inquiry, as highly individual or intensely collaborative work, and as a
significant part of the larger culture of its time. In sum, the Abrams
Prize will be awarded to the work that best conveys the "life of science."

The Prize is to be awarded biennially at the History of Science Society
meetings, beginning in November 2003. All works in the field of history of
science accepted for publication by the University of Chicago's Board of
University Publications between 1 June 2001 and 31 May 2003 will be
eligible for the first biennial prize.

The Press is grateful to the following friends of the Press who have agreed
to serve as judges for the first two years of the Prize.

Mario Biagioli, Harvard University
Peter Galison, Harvard University
Lynn K. Nyhart, University of Wisconsin-Madison
James A. Secord, Cambridge University
Albert Van Helden, Utrecht University
