The History of Science Society is pleased to announce its 2002 award
winners.  The prizes were awarded November 9th at the Society's annual
meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.  More information about each prize,
pictures of the prize winners, as well as nomination forms for 2003

Sarton Medal
The History of Science Society's most prestigious award recognizes an
individual whose entire career has been devoted to the field and whose
scholarship is exceptional. In 2002, HSS awarded the Sarton Medal to John
C. Greene, emeritus professor at the University of Connecticut.

Pfizer Award
The Pfizer Award is the highest honor awarded by the History of Science
Society for a work of scholarship. It recognizes an outstanding book in
the history of science published during the previous three calendar years,
and carries a $2500 cash prize. James A. Secord's book, Victorian
Sensation: The Extraordinary Publication, Reception, and Secret Authorship
of "Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation"  (University of Chicago
Press, 2000) was recognized by the 2002 Pfizer Committee.

Derek Price/Rod Webster Prize
The Derek Price/Rod Webster Award annually recognizes an outstanding
article published in Isis during the previous three calendar years. It
also carries a $1,000 cash prize. The 2002 award went to Daniel
Schneider's article, "Local Knowledge, Environmental Politics, and the
Founding of Ecology in the United States: Stephen Forbes and 'The Lake as
Microcosm' (1887)" Isis v. 91, no. 3, Dec. 2000 (pp. 681-705).

Joseph H. Hazen Education Prize
The Joseph H. Hazen Education Prize, first awarded in 1998, recognizes
outstanding contributions to the teaching of history of science, and
brings a $1000 cash prize. University of Florida Professor Robert A.
Hatch's service to history of science education was honored in 2002.

Henry and Ida Schuman Prize
The Henry and Ida Schuman Prize annually recognizes an outstanding
graduate student essay in the history of science and its cultural
influences. It includes a  $500 cash prize and up to $500 in travel
reimbursement. Matthew Stanley, of Harvard University, won the 2002 award
for his essay "'An Expedition to Heal the Wounds and Desolation of War':
British Astronomy, the Great War and the 1919 Eclipse."

History of Women in Science Prize
The History of Women in Science Prize is awarded for an outstanding
contribution to the history of women in science. The $1000 prize honors a
book in odd-numbered years, and an article in even-numbered years. Ruth
Oldenziel and her article, "Multiple-Entry Visas: Gender and Engineering
in the U.S., 1870-1945," were recognized with the 2002 award. The article
appeared in the book Crossing Boundaries, Building Bridges: Comparing the
History of Women Engineers, 1870s-1990s, edited by Annie Canel, Ruth
Oldenziel, and Karin Zachmann (Harwood Academic Publishers, 2000).

Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize
The Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize annually recognizes an author
of a book useful in undergraduate teaching or promoting public
understanding of the history of science. The prize includes a $1000 cash
premium. Peter Dear and his book Revolutionizing the Sciences: European
Knowledge and Its Ambitions, 1500-1700 (Princeton University Press, 2001)
won the 2002 Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize.
