Exhibit memorialising JLW Thudichum, 1829-1901 (Osler Library of the History of Medicine, McGill University: Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
Thanks to ISHN member Ted Sourkes for the following announcement. Note also that the Osler Library will be closed for renovations at the conclusion of this exhibit, from May-September 2002. For more details see their website: http://www.health.library.mcgill.ca/osler/ The Osler Library of the History of Medicine, McGill University, presents an exhibit commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the death of J. L. W. Thudichum, often described as "the chemist of the brain." The exhibit is entitled: The life and work of J. L. W. Thudichum, 1829-1901 'A most celebrated exponent of the art of medicine and chemistry' It is based upon a text prepared by Dr. Theodore L. Sourkes, Professor emeritus, McGill University, and curated by Mrs. Pamela Miller, Osler Librarian. The exhibit, consisting of textual, pictorial and graphical material, is intended to provide a succinct summary of the professional and personal activities of a great scientist, whose work covered the second half of the nineteenth century. The special recognition in the past of Thudichum's work on the chemistry of the brain has emphasised one aspect of his scientific efforts, assuredly an important one, but at the same time has obscured his efforts in chemical pathology, parasitology, otolaryngology, the chemistry of foods, and the overarching leitmotiv: public health. Thudichum's stature in medical history is diminished if the wide scope of his productivity goes unrecognised. The exhibit opened on November 7, 2001, and continues for seven months, possibly longer, at the Health Sciences Library, McGill University, 3655 Promenade Sir William Osler, Montreal, Canada.
