Neuroscience in Mexico

In response to Dr. Pettersens' query about the history of neuroscience
in Mexico: I know a couple of people have already responded privately
about individual researchers, and I trust that others can recommend
monographs, chapters, and papers. To that I will add contact
information for people who might be of assistance. Be sure to note in
your queries your affiliation (University of Guadalajara), since your
"hotmail.com" address does not suggest your institutional address (not
that this is necessary, of course--I don't intend to put off
independent scholars, by any means--but it often helpful to include an
affiliation and/or a description of the research context in which you
are making one's query).

Mexico is represented by 2 members in the International Society for
the History of the Neurosciences (ISHN)--Drs. Eugenio Frixione and
Dr. Manuel Velasco-Suarez--and they are listed in the Geographical
Directory at: http://www.ishn.org/ishndir.htm

The representative from Mexico in the International Brain Research
Organization (IBRO) may be contacted by information provided at:
http://www.ibro.org/regions/latin_american.htm [click on "Regional
Committee Structure" to see Prof. R. Romo's address and email].

I vaguely recall that an issue of _IBRO News_ contained an article on
the history of neuroscience research in Mexico. Contact former
Editor-in-Chief (and ISHN member) Dr. Colin Blakemore
(blakemore@physiol.ox.ac.uk) or the present Editor, Andree Blakemore
(andree.blakemore@physiol.ox.ac.uk) .

Finally, a search of MEDLINE with the keywords "Mexico" and
"neuroscience" retrieves two papers with the publication type
"Historical Article":

Aréchiga-Urtuzuástegui, H. (División de Estudios de Posgrado e
Investigación 1er. Piso, Facultad de Medicina, UNAM, México, D.F.)
"Conferencia magistral "Miguel F. Jiménez". Las neurociencias y su
papel en la medicina contemporánea. [The Miguel F. Jiménez Annual
Conference. Neurosciences and their role in contemporary medicine]"
Gaceta Medica de Mexico, 1998 Sep-Oct, 134(5):567-73.

and

Feria-Velasco, A (División de Investigacíon Biomédica, Hospital de
Especialidades, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI, IMSS Mexico, D.F.)
"Historical development of the neurosciences in Mexico. An overview
with particular reference to publications on neurosciences in Archives
of Medical Research." Archives of Medical Research, 1995, 26 Spec
No:S105-7.

Cheers,

Russell Johnson
