Neuroscience History Affinity Group meeting -- Friday 28 April 2000 (UCLA: Los Angeles, California)
We would particularly like to welcome folks who are passing through Los
Angeles en route to the American Academy of Neurology's meeting in San
Diego, which begins 29 April. Besides the Neuroscience History
Archives and UCLA Biomedical Library (where you can still see our
exhibit for the opening of the Robert Galambos Papers and the John C.
Liebeskind History of Pain Collection's exhibit presented in Vienna
last summer at the World Congress on Pain), local attractions include
the Skirball Cultural Center, which is hosting the Library of
Congress/Sigmund Freud Museum/Freud Museum exhibition, "Sigmund Freud:
Conflict and Culture" <http://www.skirball.org/attract/attract.html> .
Please let us know beforehand if you are visiting, so we can offer
guidance on parking (which might be a little tricky that weekend).
NEUROSCIENCE HISTORY AFFINITY GROUP
UCLA Brain Research Institute
The next gathering of local neuroscientists and historians interested
in the history of the discipline will take place Friday, April 28, in
the John D. French Conference Room, 73-365 CHS (Center for
Health Sciences):
When: Friday, 28 April 2000
3:00 p.m.
Where: John D. French Conference Room
73-365 CHS, UCLA
Who/What: "Recent Acquisitions"
Prepare yourself for the mammoth _Los Angeles Times_ "Festival of
Books" <http://www.latimes.com/events/fob/> with an intimate, informal
viewing--and plenty of discussion, we hope--of a selection of books and
manuscripts acquired by the Neuroscience History Archives and/or the
Biomed Library's History & Special Collections Division. Items on
display will include:
- Galvani's "De viribus electricitatis in motu musculari" (1792)
- Comte's "Physiologie pour les collèges et les gens du monde" (1835)
[a "dissected plate" book comprised of illustrations of the human body
with foldable superimposed flaps containing anatomical details]
- Sechenov's "Refleksy golovnago mozga" [Reflexes of the brain] (1866)
- Cajal's "Textura del sistema nervioso del hombre y de los
vertebrados" (1899) [the rare Spanish language edition]
- Original histological drawings by Rafael Lorente de No
- A copy of "The Edwin Smith surgical papyrus" (1930) signed and
presented by University of Chicago colleagues to Percival Bailey
- Videotape of Stephen Walter Ranson's film of attendees of the
first International Neurological Congress which was held in Bern,
Switzerland in 1931
- Correspondence between Donald Lindsley and Edgar Adrian (1933)
- Museum cabinet permanent display in the French Conference Room
Just one caveat: Please--no food at this gathering!

ABOUT THE UCLA Brain Research Institute Affinity Groups: "A series of
interdisciplinary affinity groups, developed to provide scientific
exchange of specific research topics, continue to meet at regular
intervals. A number of these groups have resulted in the development
of program project grant proposals. These groups represent one of the
greatest strengths of the Institute, that is, the scientific depth and
diversity of its membership."

MARK YOUR CALENDARS:
MAY meeting: TBA
JUNE meeting: Axel Karenburg, Ph.D. (Associate Professor of the
History of Medicine, University of Cologne, Germany) will be in town to
deliver the year's final UCLA Medical Classics Lecture: " 'Peace and
quiet without doctors soon shall be mine': Frédéric Chopin's Experience
of Mid-19th Century Medicine" on June 6 (see
<http://www.library.ucla.edu/libraries/biomed/his/medclass.htm>
for details on Medical Classics programs). On June 8, at noon, Dr.
Karenberg will meet with the Neuroscience History Affinity Group to
discuss his ongoing research on the history of apoplexy, after which he
and local historians of neuroscience will head to Providence, Rhode
Island, for the 5th annual meeting of the ISHN (International Society
for the History of the Neurosciences).
Please forward this message to interested colleagues and friends!
