Engravings of neurological interest

In the 19 th century books including medical books were commonly
illustrated by engravings. To make a satisfactory engraving is a much
more skilled and time consuming task that to take a photograph. I think
because the artist and engraver had to summarise in comparatively simple
ways the main points many of these engravings have high artistic merit.

Gowers works for instance are illustrated by engravings and I have come
across a number I admire to do with occupational cramps.

Some earlier writers such as Borelli (1685) ‘de Motu Animalium’ used
woodcuts and often these were very good.

I also have some collections of clip art on my computer. These are
mostly disappointing, perhaps ‘Naff’ is the correction description of
some of them.

Does anyone on the list know of a collection of clip art of engravings
of medical, and particularly neurological subjects ?

Nearly all will now be out of copyright.
