Bill wondered whether you might have good graduate or postgraduate students who would be prepared to write some of these for us. The Encyclopedia of Life Sciences is a huge project currently being developed by the Nature Publishing Group. This is a unique and ambitious electronic (and print) reference, comprising 12 million words (over 3,000 specially commissioned articles) due to be published in April next year. It will aim to serve not only serious students but also the academic community itself, and the electronic version will be constantly updated and linked to many other online resources. ELS aims to provide accessible material of the very highest academic quality and we some 3,000 top scientists and historians writing for us. Coverage is broad, and will include about 1,000 "science and society" articles (on history and philosophy of science, bioethics etc), of which 500 will be biographies of scientists who have made major contributions to the understanding of biology. Although many of these articles have been commissioned we still have about 150 that are unassigned. Prospective authors should contact me at the address given below.
