Re: Request for sources on mutual autopsy societies

David:

In addition to sources about which I wrote you yesterday about the
first 2 societies, a suggestion for the 3rd one:

Duane Haines has written about the work of Edward Anthony Spitzka, some
of whose reports were read at meetings of the American Anthropometric
Society (AAS) and written up in the Transactions of the American
Philosophical Society. There are no online records (that I could
readily find) about holdings of the records of the AAS, but check NUCMC
(the National Union Catalogue of Manuscript Collections) and confer
with the librarian/archivist at the American Philosphical Society
 , too.

See also Jerome Loving's "Walt Whitman: The Song of Himself (University
of California, 1999) for the legendary account of the ASA and Whitman's
brain -- which, I suspect, might be one of the stories that you're
already pursuing.

Cheers,

Russell Johnson
