BURROUGHS WELLCOME FUND (BWF)
ANNUAL RESEARCH TRAVEL GRANTS
2000-2001 PROGRAM

PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Program enables U.S. and Canadian biomedical scientists and medical
historians to work for brief periods, from two weeks to six months, in the
United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland. Approximately 50 research travel
grants, including 10 in the history of medicine, are awarded annually.
Grants, which cover travel and subsistence expenses, average $5,400 (ranging
from $1,000 to $15,000). Funds to cover economy airfare for one return trip
may be available to facilitate academic or clinical continuity during longer
visits (five to six months).

Three types of travel grants are offered. Applicants for all grants must be
citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada at the time
of application.

--Established Scientific Investigators
Candidates must hold an M.D. or Ph.D. degree and an academic appointment at
the assistant professor level or above. Grants may be used to participate
in collaborative research projects in the basic biomedical sciences,
medically oriented behavioral sciences, and clinical research, or for
participation in training projects to acquire new research techniques.

--Medical Historians
Candidates must hold an M.D. or Ph.D. degree and an academic appointment at
the assistant professor level or above. Preference will be given to
historians working in the area of 20th Century medicine and to those who
plan to work at the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine in
London, or at one of its academic units. Medical historians may participate
in collaborative research projects or conduct their own projects.
Researchers in this area should contact BWF before submitting an application
to determine full eligibility.

--Postdoctoral Fellows and Advanced Graduate Students
On a trial basis, BWF will accept a limited number of applications from
postdoctoral fellows and advanced graduate students working in the basic
biomedical sciences, medically oriented behavioral sciences, or clinical
research. Postdoctoral fellows must be early in their careers and advanced
graduate students must be within a year of receiving their doctorate.
Candidates should contact BWF before submitting an application.
