Position Announcement   Archivist

History Associates Incorporated, an archives, records management,
and historical research firm located in Rockville Maryland, is
seeking an archivist for the processing of the records of a
health maintenance organization.

The successful candidate shall perform a range of archival tasks
in the survey, appraisal, arrangement, and description of the
records of an HMO that are in the process of being donated to a
major repository.  Primary duties shall include implementing the
arrangement and description of the records under the direction of
the supervisory archivist; collecting information to be included
in an archival finding aid in both paper and electronic form;
keeping the supervisory archivist informed about issues arising
from the arrangement and description of the records; and
reviewing documents for privacy and sensitivity.  Gradually
performs increasingly difficult and more independent archival
duties under instruction and close supervision of the supervisory
archivist, including appraisal of records as to their archival
value and participation in planning decisions.

The archivist will carry out the work at a processing facility to
be determined, most likely in the Frederick or Germantown, MD,
area.  The hours to be worked shall be between 8:30 A.M. and 5:00
P.M., Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays.  The
expected start date is October 1 and the project is anticipated
to last at least two years. This is a full-time position.

Qualifications

Master's degree in history, library science, or related
discipline, supplemented by archival course/seminars or practica;
two to three years' experience working with large contemporary
collections (experience with science and medicine based
collections preferred but not required); ability to compose
clear, concise, grammatically correct descriptive narratives;
ability to collect, organize, research, interpret, and submit
written descriptions of record groups and collections; ability to
work harmoniously and effectively with others and to communicate
archival benefits and functions to laymen; ability to identify
problems and present and implement recommendations for their
solution; ability to work independently and to exercise
discretion, initiative, and judgement.
