Position available: Charles Babbage Institute, Assistant Archivist

The Charles Babbage Institute (CBI) invites applications and nominations
for the position of Assistant Archivist.  Located at the University of
Minnesota, CBI is an historical research and archival unit dedicated to the
history of information processing. The mission of its archival program is
to collect, preserve, and make available records relating to information
processing after 1935, and to conduct archival research to enhance the
selection and accessibility of such records.

The Assistant Archivist engages in all functions and activities of the unit
under the supervision of the CBI Archivist.  Duties include: accessioning,
arranging and describing archival and manuscript collections including
preparing finding aids and MARC records; providing on-site, email, mail,
and telephone reference services to a diverse clientele; maintaining local
databases, administrative files, and unit statistics; participating in
development of the CBI website, conducting archival research where
appropriate; participating in collection development efforts and promoting
use of the collections where appropriate; supervising student workers.

Required qualifications:
Five years archives or library experience.  Related college education can
be substituted for experience on a year for year basis up to three years.
Experience arranging and describing archival and manuscript materials.
Experience with word processing and office software applications.  Must be
able to lift 40lb boxes.

Desired qualifications:
Knowledge of basic archival principles, standards, and procedures;
knowledge of basic archival preservation techniques; knowledge of the
history of computers; experience supervising student workers; ability to
develop and use Internet resources in the archival environment and
experience with html and sgml; archival reference experience.  Excellent
written and oral communications skills.

Salary and benefits:
Full medical and dental benefits.  Expected salary $27,227.

Projected start date: 16 September 1999
