project, I'm sure, but others who now work in other archives might not
have seen this.

Lindy Biggs <lbiggs@sas.upenn.edu> writes:
The U.S Department of Energy - Richland Operations (DOE-RL), is producing a
report on the Hanford Plutonium Production Complex in Washington State to
comply with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1974. Because
Hanford played a significant role in the history of the United States, the
government is required to mitigate the effects of dismantling the buildings
associated with the Manhattan Project and Cold War. Through negotiations
with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the Washington State
Historic Preservation Office, and local stakeholders, DOE-RL agreed to,
among other things, produce an historical report that documents the major
themes and buildings at Hanford (see the Treatment Plan on the web site
for further information
[http://www.hanford.gov/docs/rl97-56/rl97-56.htm]. It is important to note
that we are not attempting to write the definitive history of Hanford.
Rather, we are documenting the major events, activities, and material
manifestations of these activities. Our goal is to provide a summary
history for the public who want more than a cursory overview of Hanford,
and a sourcebook for historians, engineers, and others who want to pursue
additional research.
The report, tentatively titled Before They Fall: Historic Preservation of
Plutonium Production Facilities at the Hanford Site, 1943-1990, is in
progress.
The historical narratives portion of the book will be completed by October
1999; eight sections are currently available for review via our web site
(http://www.hanford.gov/docs/rl-97-1047/index.htm). In the interest of
making this report as useful as possible to researchers, we welcome comments,
suggestions, and ideas from those with an interest in the history of
science and technology, the Manhattan Project/Cold War, the nuclear era,
and other relatedtopics.
Please provide coments to Dr. Darby C. Stapp (K6-75), Pacific
Northwest National Laboratory, P.O. Box 999, Richland, WA 99352,

information on Hanford history and the historic preservation program can be
