Except on the Internet, I haven't often seen people who feel the need to
insult or comment on things they know nothing about. That is crass and rude.
I'm on this list because I am trying to accomplish the difficult goal of
finding an American home for a very important achival treasure, wanted by
both the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress . (and also by some
institutions who subscribe to this list, that have been trying to come up
with acquisition funding). And having, personally, spent several millions
on museum and archival treasures (of which this archive is about one
percent) which I share freely, with other researchers and institutions, at
no charge,(for decades) I feel no obligation to give this one collection as
a free donation.(The funds can be used for other projects, here)
The Wright and related archives already have a private foreign buyer
waiting to take it away if an American institution isn't interested. This is
one of the areas where the Milleneum grants could be put to good use. Since
the Wright ledger alone, has been appraised as having the capability to
bring one million dollars at auction, by the experts in the field, it is
hardly crass to offer it to an American archival institution at a fraction
of the figures for the entire ten crates which make up this archive.
If you are ignorant of the facts, and make no effort to learn them,
silence is called for.
Cheers, Joe Gertler
