Description
Under the supervision of the Director or his designee, develop a
research plan. Undertake research in secondary and primary
sources relevant to scientists to be interviewed. Conduct
audio-recorded in-depth interviews. Complete required
post-interview tasks that enable Program colleagues to fulfill
contractual obligations efficiently, effectively, and on schedule for
the Pew Scholars in the Biomedical Sciences Oral History and Archives
Project. Duties require extensive travel to interviewee
locations and annual Pew Scholars and professional history conferences,
all but a few outside the state of California and
occasionally outside the U.S.
Qualifications
Extensive background in and knowledge of the history of science,
particularly post-World War II biomedical research. Ability to
conceptualize, implement, and complete pre-interview research plans in
secondary and primary sources and apply information during one-on-one
oral history interviews with scientists. Demonstrated ability to
complete imaginative and informative one-on-one oral history interviews
in the biomedical sciences. Ability to extract accurate name spellings
and technical terms from scientific sources. Demonstrated interpersonal
skills to communicate with scientists, faculty, academic staff, and
students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and social backgrounds. Skill in
self-evaluating interview content to seek additional facts and
clarifications. Working knowledge of IBM PC WordPerfect and laptop
computers/complementary software programs. Experience in professional
tape recording techniques preferred. Possession of valid California
Driver's License and U.S. passport preferred.
