Position Announcement

ARCHIVIST, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY.

The archival collections of the Museum focus on archaeological and
anthropological field work and research, as well as the administrative and
collections history of the institution from its foundation in 1887.
Archival materials include 2000 linear feet of textual records, 300,000
photographic images (including a large collection of 19th-century Notable
Photographers), and other special collections (maps, plans, art on paper,
etc.).

Major challenges facing the Archives are the renovation of the historic
facilities to meet archival environmental standards; enhancing access and
preservation of collections through current and emerging information
technologies; and the development of funding through grant-writing and/or
donations.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Associate Director for Collections and
Exhibitions, the Archivist is responsible for: promoting the Archives to
Museum staff, scholars, and the public; administering the Archives and
supervising full-time Photographic and Reference Archivists, work-study
students, and volunteers. Duties include policy development,
grant-writing, budget administration, accessioning new materials,
processing collections, computerization, providing reference services, and
preservation of materials.

Qualifications: M.A. or M.L.S. degree with concentration in archives.
Archival certification preferred. Three to five years experience as a
professional archivist. Background in museum studies and/or anthropology
and archaeology desirable. Demonstrated knowledge of archival principles
and procedures. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills, and
ability to communicate with diverse university community. Knowledge of
information and imaging technology.

Salary: $34,100–36,800; excellent benefits.

To Apply: Applicants should send cover letter, résumé, and names, addresses
and telephone numbers of three references to: Dr. Mel Hammarberg, Chair,
Search Committee, University of Pennsylvania Museum, 33rd & Spruce Streets,
Philadelphia, PA 19104-6324. Application deadline is April 15, 1999.
