Please excuse cross posting. I thought this may be of interest to others on these lists. -----Original Message----- Announcing the Summer Institute on Data Curation June 2-5, 2008 Graduate School of Library and Information Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) will hold a Summer Institute on Data Curation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, from June 2 through June 5, 2008. With support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, GSLIS is pioneering the development of data curation education in library and information science programs. Data curation is the active and on-going management of research data through its lifecycle of interest and usefulness to scholarship, science, and education. In response to requests from practicing librarians, we are holding this workshop to address the growing need for data services and curation activities in academic and research libraries. Topics to be covered include: day-to-day digital preservation; technical aspects of data repository systems; appraisal and selection of digital data; and resource requirements for a data curation program. Objectives for the Institute: Participants will - understand what data curation is in the academic library context; - understand what skill sets, resources, and collaborations are necessary to develop and implement a data curation program in an academic library; - understand the main questions, decisions, and best practices for implementing and doing data curation; - understand the components of a repository development plan (goals, institutional commitment, responsibility, collection development policy, preservation plan, data management plan). Invited speakers include: Tim DiLauro, Digital Library Architect in the Digital Research and Curation Center, Sheridan Libraries, Johns Hopkins University; Ruth Duerr, data archivist and manager, National Snow and Ice Data Center; Tim Donohue, research programmer for the UIUC IDEALS institutional repository; Prof. Carole Palmer, Director of the GSLIS Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship; and Michael Witt, Interdisciplinary Research Librarian, Purdue University Libraries. Tuition for the Institute is: $260.00 This will include the workshop program, curriculum and reference materials, a reception and some meals. Dormitory housing is available in Sherman Hall, a graduate dorm adjacent to GSLIS. The cost is $39.45 per night for a single room. Housing alternatives include rooms in the Illini Union Hotel (starting at $94/night) or local area hotels that are within walking distance, on a bus route, or provide shuttle service. Application Requirements: Please complete the form, which is available at: https://webtools.uiuc.edu/formBuilder/Secure?id=6777284 We are accepting applications from practicing academic librarians and information professionals who want to learn more about data curation services in academic libraries. As many as 3 people from a single institution may apply, teams are welcome. This workshop, while introductory, will be targeted to information professionals working in academic libraries that have started or are planning research data repositories and services. While we will present on general issues related to data curation, the focus will be on scientific research data. The Institute will be limited to 26 participants.
