[Previous Posting] [Next Posting] question on surgical films
One place to look is WorldCat. I'll try and paste in the info below. Is this his film? If it's not visible, go to worldcat and do an advanced search for "transurethral prostatectomy" with the format "videocassette. " I also did a search for "endoscopic surgery," also specifying videocassette, from 1960 to 1980. You might try searching in PubMed or even google, for the "first endoscopic surgery." A google search turned up this result: 1957 - Physician Basil Hirschowitz (S. Africa/USA) performs the first endoscopic surgery. The fiber optic endoscope, modified as a gastroscope, had been developed by Hirschowitz along with physicists Lawrence Curtiss and C. Wilbur Peters. http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/optics/timeline/1934-1966.html Maybe your doc meant the first endoscopic prostate surgery..... Instructional film or videos were not only produced by medical professional associations; academic health centers, cancer centers, medical schools, etc., also filmed or videotaped procedures, grand rounds, etc., and would sell these. Good luck! Lesley Lesley W. Brunet, CA University of Texas M. D.
