[Previous Posting] [Next Posting] Proposed IRB regs and oral history research
Dear STHC Colleagues, The DHHS Office of Human Research Protections is inviting public comment on proposed regulations that define what research should be reviewed by an IRB through an expedited review process [see: http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/documents/20071026.htm ]. Comments are due to OHRP by December 26, 2007. A background document to the Federal Register notice above is a letter from OHRP to the Secretary of DHHS in March 2007 [see: http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/sachrp/documents/20070314SACHRPlettertotheSecretary.pdf ]. How OHRP views oral history research, as it has developed these proposed regs over the past several years, has been a concern among many historians. The American Historical Association is still formulating an official response to the proposed regs, but has a blog posting on some of the problems that IRB regulation of oral history may pose (see: http://blog.historians.org/profession/372/the-feds-and-irbs-your-opportunity-to-weigh-in ). In 2006, the American Association of University Professors weighed in to the larger controversy about IRBs and research, as well (see: http://www.aaup.org/AAUP/comm/rep/A/humansubs.htm ). I encourage those of you who are interested to submit your comments to OHRP.
