Dear Colleagues,

I hope to see you at the Society of American Archivists Annual
Meeting next month in Chicago and at the Science Technology and
Health Care Roundtable meeting. The Roundtable meeting will be
August 29 from 6 - 8 pm at the Fairmont Hotel. The agenda will
be posted shortly. We have a full and busy meeting schedule,
including a special program on the use and care of artifacts
in collections.

There are two open seats on the STHC Steering Committee. A
brief discussion of Steering Committee duties is attached.
In-depth discussion of Steering Committee's role is in the
STHC Leadership Handbook on the STHC website at
http://www.archivists.org/saagroups/sthc/STHC_Leaders_Handbook.pdf

Please consider serving on the STHC Steering Committee.
Steering Committee membership is a valuable and enjoyable way to
promote the interests, visibility, and professional development
of STHC archives and archivists. Most work is conducted via
email with a Steering Committee meeting during the SAA Annual
Meeting. You do not have to be an SAA member to serve on Steering
Committee.

Please let me know if you are interested in serving on Steering
Committee. If you have questions about steering committee service
feel free to contact me or Paul Theerman, Co-Chair or any current
members of the Steering Committee. Their names and contact
information are on the website.

I hope to see many of you in Chicago.

Best regards,

Janice Goldblum

STHC Steering Committee

ii. Selection Process: In the month before the Annual Meeting, the Cochairs
send a message to the membership (via STHC-L) soliciting interest in
serving on the Steering Committee. They make a similar announcement/call at
the Annual Meeting. Once it has been determined how many sitting Steering
Committee members are retiring from the Committee (thus, how many new slots
are available), the co-chairs consult with the Steering Committee to select the
new members. In selecting members, chairs strive for a balance of
representation among archivists working in science, technology, and health care
(and, to a lesser degree, a geographic balance). Usually, 2-3 new members are
added to the Steering Committee each year.

iii. Duties: Each Steering Committee member brings his or her unique
talents and interests to the group. Duties of committee members vary according
to the individual. Some usual duties of Steering Committee members include:

- Develop and/or solicit proposals for sessions at the SAA meeting.
- Write and/or solicit articles for the roundtable’s newsletter.
- Respond to email queries from the Co-chairs and contribute to
discussions throughout the year about programs, policies, and
procedures.
- Take the lead on issues of concern to STHC archives.
- Liaise with other groups with related interests (e.g. ALHHS,
CASE).
- Attend the Steering Committee meeting.
