Position Description: Req #: mdac-00015428 Salary: $40,000-$60,000 Function Provides professional library archival service. Scope Impacts the management and coordination of the timely availability of archival and rare book materials to clients. Essential Functions 1. Appraise, accession, arrange and describe institutional records and special collections, in accordance with professional archival standards and practices, and prepare MARC catalog records, EAD-encoded finding aids, and subject guides. 2. Provide on-site and remote reference service to faculty, staff, and outside researchers, including monitoring researchers using collections in the HRC reading room. 3. Conduct preservation assessment of collections and work with Assistant Director in planning and implementing preservation measures. 4. Coordinate with the Assistant Director the priorities for processing, descriptive and metadata standards, authority names and subject headings. 5. Work with Assistant Director in collection database management, planning and implementation of digital collections, and preparation of exhibits and outreach materials. Responsible for supervising and/or conducting special project initiatives. 6. Represent the Library with on- and off-campus committees and organizations. 7. Analyze statistical data statistics and prepares reports as needed. Education Required: Masters degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association. Preferred: Masters degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association with an emphasis on archival enterprise. Additional bachelors or masters degree in History. Required Experience: minimum of 2 years professional archival processing and reference experience. Preferred Requirements: Minimum of two years professional archival experience processing institutional or university archives and special collections. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using MARC, LC and MeSH subject headings, AACR2, APPM, EAD, and DACS, web publishing (HTML, XLM), automated library information systems, cataloging and encoding finding aids in XML. Demonstrated experience in arranging and describing photographic collections, digital imaging, database creation and management, as well as records management standards and practices. Demonstrated experience providing on-site and remote reference assistance. Demonstrated experience preparing archival exhibits (physical and virtual exhibits) and outreach, and supervising paraprofessional staff and volunteers in processing archival material. Demonstrated experience working with microcomputers and basic software applications. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in wri ting. Experience with digital imaging, Adobe Photoshop, metadata standards such as Dublin Core, and web authoring tools and markup language. Proven success with the timely/efficient processing of large/complex archival collections. Experience working in an academic health center, university archives, or special collections department, especially with confidential material. Strong knowledge of Houston history. Professional demeanor and enthusiasm for service excellence. Ability to read and absorb historical information and synthesize in concise and accurate manner. Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a production-oriented team environment. Lesley W.
