North Carolina State University Libraries HEAD OF THE SPECIAL COLLECTIONS RESEARCH CENTER Vacancy Announcement Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The North Carolina State University Libraries has been recognized as the first recipient of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for its teamwork, innovation, and continuous interaction with students and faculty to further the educational mission of NC State University. The NCSU Libraries is ranked 29th by the Association of Research Libraries among North America’s top 113 academic research libraries. The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Special Collections Research Center. A major renovation, to be completed in March 2007, will provide a well-appointed reading room and a spacious, state-of-the- art gallery for exhibitions. Responsibilities The Head of the Special Collections Research Center leads a growing program of special collections and archives in support of teaching and research at the university. The incumbent provides strategic and effective management of collections, policy, budget, and personnel (10 staff plus graduate assistants) in a customer-oriented, technologically sophisticated environment. In this highly visible position, she or he works closely with faculty, researchers, and administrators, facilitates student use of primary source material, and is the leading point of contact for the Research Center’s benefactors. The Head of the Special Collections Research Center collaborates with colleagues throughout the Libraries to support a growing digital collections program and to position the Center to collect and manage born digital materials. She or he participates in library planning, and serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. NCSU Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Associate Director for Collections & Scholarly Communication. Qualifications The successful candidate will be an experienced librarian with a current record of increasingly responsible work in special collections and of sound financial and operational management. Proven effectiveness working with students, faculty, and researchers is required. The capability to lead initiatives for digital access to collections is expected, along with an understanding of the scholarly communication process. Outstanding written and oral communications and interpersonal skills are essential. Preference will be given to candidates with proven success in collections or digital initiatives, grant writing and administration, and donor relations. Candidates should demonstrate an ongoing and current record of professional development and contribution. An advanced degree in a relevant discipline is required; an ALA-accredited MLS is preferred. The NCSU Libraries is the lead server site for NC LIVE (North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education), a multi-type library initiative, making digital resources accessible to the citizens of North Carolina. The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the Coalition for Networked Information, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library and Information Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University and North Carolina State University form the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources of more than 13 million volumes, and collections budgets totaling more than $29 million. Salary and Benefits The Libraries offers highly competitive salaries in recognition of applicable education and experience, not less than $80,000 for this position. Relocation allowance provided. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank).
