Subject: Contract Reference Archivist: National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Institution is offering a 12-month contract for a reference archivist
in the National Anthropological Archives. The NAA collects and preserves historical
and contemporary anthropological materials that document the world's cultures and the
history of anthropology. The NAA is located in Suitland, MD, about 6 miles southeast
of the National Mall.

Scope of Work: The contractor shall provide professional services as the primary
reference archivist in the National Anthropological Archives. Specific services include:
Interviewing archives patrons to determine research interests and requirements;
providing appropriate finding aids and guides; providing assistance with online
catalogs; locating appropriate collections for reference use and re-shelving
collections; responding to written inquiries and phones calls; routing
requests for photocopies, photography, and digital imaging services to
appropriate archives staff members; and maintaining a visitor database
and reference correspondence. The contractor may also attend meetings
and must be able to work independently.

Required Qualifications: Prospective contractors should have a minimum of
1 year equivalent experience in an archival or library setting. An
ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree is highly desirable. Preference will
be given to prospective contractors with academic training or experience
relating to anthropology, archaeology, or area studies.

The Smithsonian Institution will accept written bids for this contract.
(A bid is simply a statement indicating your desired rate of pay.) The deadline
for receipt of bids is September 4, 2006. Prospective contractors should
contact the archives director, Dr. Robert Leopold (leopold@si.edu or
301.238.1311), for application instructions and a copy of the complete
Request for Quotations (RFQ), or to discuss the archives and the position
in further detail.
