Job Title: Archivist
Department: Historical Collections & Rare Books
Reports To: Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts

Summary: 
The New York Academy of Medicine is seeking a qualified processing archivist for a 
temporary full-time term of between six and twelve months. Responsibilities include: 
creating MARC-format survey-level catalog records for unprocessed manuscript and archival 
collections (some subject cataloging required, utilizing both LCSH and MeSH); 
re-housing collections; and other related duties as assigned. Reports to the Curator of 
Rare Books and Manuscripts.

The New York Academy of Medicine is a not-for-profit corporation established in 
1847 to promote the public's health. The Academy maintains one of the largest 
medical research libraries in the country, with over 750,000 volumes, 275,000 
portraits and illustrations and about 400,000 pamphlets. The Historical Collections 
Department includes primary and secondary materials in the history of medicine, 
science and other health-related disciplines, and a rare book collection of approximately 
32,000 volumes, and manuscripts and archives dating from ca. 17th century BCE to the 
21st century CE. 

Qualifications:
Required: MLS from an accredited library school or equivalent training. Some knowledge 
and experience with the processing, arrangement and description of personal papers, 
organizational records and archival collections. Knowledge of MARC is essential. Ability 
to lift up to 40 lb. boxes and push fully loaded book trucks.

Preferred: Excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills, initiative 
and flexibility. Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively 
in a complex environment. Experience with Voyager, the Library's online system.
