John __________________________ ERPANET / DCC Workshop on the Long-term Curation and Preservation of Medical Databases Calouste Gulbenkain Foundation Lisbon, Portugal October 13-14, 2005 Enabling access to and re-use of digital information is an integral part of medical research and health-service provision and is essential for enabling accountability. This workshop will explore the ways that practitioners can support accessibility and reusability of databases over time. This workshop provides an opportunity for information professionals, medical practitioners, commercial developers, students, and researchers to network with colleagues, learn about current developments, discuss their own experiences, and to identify risks and challenges that are likely to emerge. Presentations, panel discussions and breakout sessions will offer participants cross-disciplinary perspectives on the long-term preservation of medical databases. This workshop will be held at the Gulbenkian Institute in Lisbon, Portugal from October 13-14th, 2005. This event is co-sponsored by ERPANET, the Gulbenkian Institute and the Digital Curation Centre. CALL FOR PAPERS In addition to the keynote address and selected invited papers, proposals are being solicited for presentations and panels for this workshop on the long-term curation and preservation of medical databases. We encourage submissions from medical practitioners, academics, students, developers, business analysts, managers, and others who are working with medical databases or deal with information architecture. Paper or panel proposals may be submitted as PDF via email to Joy Davidson (british.editor@erpanet.org). Submissions must be received no later than June 24, 2004 and should include the following information: -Title of paper and presentation -Author name(s) -Organization -Address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address -Brief description of how your contribution relates to the theme of this seminar -Abstract for the paper -Short biographical sketch Submissions should also designate a primary contact person along with their contact details (phone number, and e-mail address) for responses. Authors will receive confirmation of receipt of papers by email on June 24, 2005. All papers accepted will be published in the seminar proceedings. Notification will be made for successful proposals by July 29th, 2005. Final versions of papers must be submitted by September 16th, 2005 for inclusion in the seminar proceedings. TOPICS Suggested topics include, but need not be limited to: -Curating medical databases including: -genomic databases -patient records -medical imaging databases -clinical trials -health insurance databases -national health databases -Formats for the long-term preservation of medical data -Business models for establishing sustainable medical databases -Roles and Responsibilities -Privacy versus access -Workflows for curating and preserving medical databases -Research and metrics in developing preservable medical databases -Training opportunities for health informatics -Future directions and challenges Abstracts of up to 1000 words may be submitted for presentations and proposals for breakout sessions up to June 24th, 2005. Notification will be made for successful proposals by July 29th, 2005. Final papers must be submitted by September 16th, 2005 to be included in the workshop proceedings as preprints. Presentation slides must be submitted no later than October 1st, 2005.
