STHC-L was moved to a new server at UCLA the end of January, and the posting address
changed from "sthc-l@library.ucla.edu" to "sthc-l@lists.ucla.edu".

The end of January we automatically subscribed all STHC-L members
to the new list location. You should have received a Welcome message from the new list with
details about the setting for your subscription, including a password that you will use to
configure your membership options. Member options (e.g., setting to daily DIGEST mode) may
also be configured by sending a request to the list administrator at: rjohnson@library.ucla.edu

The old list was run on LISTPROC software and was administered by email commands. The
new list runs on MAILMAN software, which has a web-based administrative interface
which I am still learning (the administrative interface is Web-based but instructions are
written in early 1980s tech-speak, which I vaguely recall), so please be patient.

Some new features:

- Each posting from STHC-L has a Subject line which starts with "[STHC-L]"
followed by the subject provided by the sender. It also contains several lines at the
bottom of the posting: name of the list, its posting address, and the URL of the list's
Information Sheet on the Web. This way, it will be very clear that the message came from
this list.

- I have also changed the "Reply-To" line so when you hit "REPLY" your message goes to the
individual who posted the message, NOT to the entire list. To reply to the entire list, you
will need to use the "REPLY TO ALL" feature of your email system. This will stifle some list
discussion, unfortunately, but it also will prevent people from unintentionally posting private
responses and credit card numbers and so forth to the list.

- Usually, messages are delivered to all subscribers as soon as they are posted. You may
wish to receive at most one combined message from STHC-L each day--especially on those
infrequent days when I send a barrage of several new announcements! You may set your subscription to
"DIGEST" mode through the list's website and then receive daily cumulations (only on days
when there are any postings, of course). I am still wading through documentation and contacting
the network manager to see whether the digest can be set for Weekly rather than Daily mode,
too, but don't have an answer for this yet. Likewise, I have not yet located the command which
allows one to Postpone the list and stop receiving postings while on vacation or otherwise away.

- The server and MAILMAN software both have upgraded Spam and Virus filters.

Same as before:

- STHC-L@lists.ucla.edu will be unmoderated (subscribers' messages are not screened
or filtered).

- Subscription attempts require my confirmation and approval. This is done to prevent
Spam generators from subscribing, posting, and unsubscribing.

- Only subscribers may post messages, so Spam attempts are short-circuited (this also
means your posting will not be accepted if you try to write from an unsubscribed email
address).

- Bottom line: any problems you encounter or changes you want to make may be addressed
directly to me at: rjohnson@library.ucla.edu

cheers,

Russell Johnson
