Subject: Project Archivist: National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institution
Statement of Work: The Smithsonian Institution is offering an 18-month term
contract for a project archivist in the National Anthropological Archives.
The NAA collects and preserves historical and contemporary anthropological
materials that document the world's cultures and the history of
anthropology.
Scope of Work: The contractor shall provide professional, non-technical
services in the form of on-site collection processing, collections
cataloguing, and reference assistance at the National Anthropological
Archives in Suitland, MD.
Specific Tasks: The contractor will process and arrange manuscript and
photograph collections, prepare collection finding aids in Microsoft Word
format, produce MARC-formatted collection-level records for SIRIS (the
Smithsonian's online public access catalog), and assist archives staff in
providing reference assistance (respond to written inquiries, determine
visitors' research needs, assist with searches in guides, finding aids and
catalogs, and locate and re-shelve archival collections in storage).
Deliverables: The contractor shall provide a monthly progress report that
1. Describes collections processing and collections cataloging activities to
date, 2. Lists archival supplies required for upcoming processing
assignments, 3. Summarizes applicable processing, reference, copyright and
IP issues that may require attention from archives management.
Required Qualifications: Prospective contractors should have an
ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree, a minimum of 1-2 years equivalent
experience processing collections, experience with automated library systems
and MS Office Suite, and the ability to work on several projects
simultaneously. Preference will be given to prospective contractors with
experience processing field work materials; a degree in anthropology,
archaeology, or area studies; familiarity with MARC-AMC, APPM, and DAC.
The Smithsonian Institution will accept written bids for this contract.
Bids should include the following information: (1) contractor rate; (2) a
current CV; and (3) names and contact information for three references.
Prospective contractors are encouraged to submit supplementary materials
that provide evidence of accomplishments. Submit these materials as Word
email attachments to Dr. Robert Leopold (leopold@si.edu) by Feb 15, 2005.
