Subject: Summer internship at Yale University

The Manuscripts and Archives Department of the Yale University Library 
invites applications for its 2004 summer internship program. The program 
is designed to provide a current graduate student planning a career in 
the archives profession with an opportunity to obtain practical experience 
in appraisal, arrangement, description, preservation, and other aspects 
of archival work. The intern will be immersed in the day-to-day operations 
of a major archival repository that resides within a preeminent research 
library and will work with both manuscript collections and university 
archives.

Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Head of Arrangement 
and Description and the Internship Committee, appraises, arranges, 
and describes archival record units and manuscript collections. Potential 
projects include the processing of the personal papers of the sportswriter 
Herbert Warren Wind and the records of the Division of Student Mental 
Hygiene. Participate in staff and working group meetings and perform, 
when necessary, other duties relating to collection development and 
reference services. 

Length: 10 weeks @ 37.5 hours/week, during the months May-August.

Requirements: The intern must be enrolled in an advanced degree program 
in archival administration, library and information studies, or a related 
field and have completed some archives coursework at the advanced degree l
evel. Students who receive their professional degree prior to the beginning 
of the internship are ineligible. The intern must also have excellent 
oral and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team 
setting.

Preferred: Undergraduate and/or graduate coursework in U.S. history and 
culture.

Stipend: $4000 (The internship does not include housing, benefits, or 
travel/moving expenses.)

Application procedure: Applicants should submit a letter describing their 
interest in the internship and the archival profession, a resume, a list 
of courses completed or underway in the advanced degree program, and the 
names and contact information of three references. Application materials
