The Carnegie Institution of Washington (CIW) has openings for two full-time
(temporary) archivists starting July 1, to work on a two-year NHPRC funded
project to arrange, describe, and preserve the historical records of the
Institution's administrative headquarters in downtown Washington DC and its
Department of Terrestrial Magnetism and Geophysical Laboratory in northwest
DC. Working with CIW's professional Archives Coordinator, the archivists
will process 38,000 photographic records and 1,700 linear feet of
historical correspondence, publications, scientific field notebooks,
architectural drawings, data sets, and financial records documenting such
people as past Carnegie presidents Vannevar Bush, Philip Abelson, and James
Ebert, and such scientists as George Ellery Hale and Barbara McClintock as
well as many scientific expeditions and the development of scientific
apparatus and theories.
The Carnegie Institution of Washington is a private, nonprofit scientific
research organization with departments across the country. CIW was founded
100 years ago by Andrew Carnegie to "encourage, in the broadest and most
liberal manner, investigation, research, and discovery and the application
of knowledge to the improvement of mankind."
Qualifications
Candidates should ideally have a master's degree in history, library
science, or related discipline with degree concentration in archival
studies or supplemented by archival courses, seminars, or practica, and 18
months experience appraising, arranging, and describing archival records;
demonstrated ability to collect, organize, research, and interpret records
and submit written descriptions of record groups and collections;
demonstrated, practical knowledge of archival policies and procedures;
ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and judgement;
familiarity with major word processing and database software packages;
working knowledge of EAD and MARC. Ability to lift, move, and shelve packed
record storage boxes is required. Certification by the Academy of Certified
Archivists is preferred.
Starting salary is $40-42,000. Excellent benefits package.
