Colleagues -
Good Afternoon. Let me first apologize for interrupting your day and
for any duplication of this message. I'd like to take this opportunity
to recommend viewing of "Partners of the Heart" a documentary airing as
part of American Experience tonight from 9-10 on MPT and WETA. Having
been invited to a screening last weekend, I can attest that this
documentary tells a great story and combines plenty of archival
materials from the collections at Johns Hopkins and other institutions.
The story is about the relationship between white surgeon Alfred
Blalock and his African-American "technician" Vivien Thomas and how
they worked together to develop the procedure for treating "blue
babies" in the 1940s. In the interest of full disclosure, I'll note
that I was once employed as the reference archivist for the Alan Mason
Chesney Medical Archives at Hopkins.
Thanks,
Arian Ravanbakhsh
