Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a
Technical Information Specialist III/ Assistant Archivist (165.3)
Posting Number IB-5314
This is a flexible term (at will) appointment, not to exceed six
years. The appointment may be extended.
Nature and Scope of Job
The Innovative Business and Information Services Department has an opening
for an archivist who will work in the Records and Archives Management
group. Under limited direction from the Laboratory archivist, will
provide reference service, process collections, appraise material, and
manage online access systems. Interactions will be with all levels
including program scientists and administrators to identify and meet their
information needs and provide technical and/or administrative information
in various formats as required.
Essential Duties
- Conduct entrance and exit interviews with patrons to determine
their needs and explain research strategies and evaluate their success.
- Conduct specialized and complex searches to meet users
information
needs utilizing a variety of information resources.
- Provide software administration and database management including
documentation, system enhancement, and data transfer.
- Interact with customers to provide data in a variety of formats
and media including attention to classification and security issues and
issues relating to Freedom of Information Act, privacy, and sensitive
information.
- Appraise collections including understanding of collecting
policies, laboratory functions, and legal, financial, administrative, and
historical values.
- Arrange and describe collections including understanding of the
creator's methods and subject and with attention to determining
original order and provenance.
- Catalog materials using appropriate systems and software
including
indexing, MARC AMC, EAD, and online systems.
- Research and write administrative histories, finding aids, and
other historical instruments.
- Participate in accessioning including attention to detail,
awareness of provenance, administrative systems, and conservation
techniques and science.
Marginal Duties
- Conduct oral histories
- Participate in records surveys
- Describe Archives programs and collecting policy and archival
practices to LLNL employees at all levels.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in library science, archival administration,
history of science or related field or equivalent level of demonstrated
knowledge and experience.
- Experience using MARC AMC, EAD, or similar cataloging software.
- Experience working in an archives conducting complex research,
performing advanced information retrieval and complex searches.
- Experience using personal computers and a thorough working
knowledge of associated software applications (spread sheets, databases,
word processing, and presentations).
- Customer service skills that demonstrate responsiveness to
customer needs and requests and demonstrated experience working with
customers to meet common goals.
- Communication skills necessary to interview and explain findings;
explain and present materials; write descriptions of collections, develop
information materials, etc.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Master's degree in library science, archival administration,
history of science or another related area combined with a concentration
and/or professional training in archival administration.
- Experience working in a Department of Energy classified
environment.
- Experience working in a DOE national laboratory.
- Course work or experience in science or technology.
Salary: $4026 - $6442
U.S. citizenship is required.
