Hello Claudia,
I have very similar issues to deal with here. I certainly keep that sort
of material.
The adds are a great way to see how the hospital presented itself to the
public, or to various target groups. We've had quite intense recruitment
drives over the years for nurses, in Britain as well as here, and the
brochures etc are fascinating - often very amusing in light of the reality.
They're also good visual items to include in exhibitions.
Clippings are definately in. I know researchers can always find newspapers
in the State Library (or suchlike), but Public Affairs has done the work
for us - they're found, bound, in chronological order, ready to go. I'm
photocopying some of the older ones as the paper is deteriorating badly. I
don't think in this case it's important to keep the originals, as they can
be found in the State Library, and it's only the information that I want
here. In fact much of what has come from Public Affairs quite recently is
already photocopied. I don't cull any of this material, as it comes to me
in scrap books which couldn't be altered or lever arch folders full of
photocopies. It's simpler to leave it as it is and have the complete record.
Hope this is of some interest. Please get in touch if you'd like to
discuss any other hospital archives issues.
Best wishes,
Robyn
