The 44th Annual ACRL/Rare Books & Manuscripts Section (RBMS)
Preconference
"TRUE/FALSE: Facsimiles, Fakes, Forgeries and Issues of Authenticity in
Special Collections"
Toronto, Canada
17-20 June 2003
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Rare Books & Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association
of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American
Library Association (ALA), seeks proposals for short papers related to
the theme of its 2003 preconference, "TRUE/FALSE: Facsimiles, Fakes,
Forgeries & Issues of Authenticity in Special Collections."
A variety of subjects might be explored in a short paper.
Examples of the many possible topics include case studies of historical
or contemporary forgery of books and/or manuscripts; the nature of a
fake, why they are made, and how they are used; fakes and forgeries in
the market; the fashion of collecting forgeries;
methods of detection; how the use of facsimiles and digital surrogates
has affected scholarship; the cultural value assigned to authentic
documents; and the culture of the copy. Proposals on all topics related
to any facet of the theme of the preconference are welcome.
Each paper selected will be allotted 20 minutes for
presentation. Papers will be presented in small group sessions, and
audience response will be encouraged.
Proposals should not exceed 250 words. They should be submitted
by 30 September 2002 to Lynda Corey Claassen, Chair, RBMS Preconference
Program Committee, at lclaassen@ucsd.edu ; or by fax at 858-534-5950; or
to Mandeville Special Collections Library, UCSD 0175-S, 9500 Gilman
Drive, La Jolla, CA 92093-0175. Decisions and notification about
proposals will be made by 1 December 2002.
Final papers should not exceed 3,000 words. Papers will be
evaluated based on relevance to the preconference theme, quality of
research and writing, and potential interest to RBMS members.
Submissions are encouraged from all interested parties,
including graduate students in relevant disciplines. Funding is not
available from RBMS to support travel costs.
