The following is a job announcement for a history of science position for
distribution to the list members.

Historian, Joseph Henry Papers Project, Smithsonian Institution Archives,
Smithsonian Institution Announcement # 02PH-1258, Closing date: August 9,
2002

Grade:  IS-0170-9  Salary: $38,406-49,924 per annum

NOTE: THIS IS A TERM POSITION NOT-TO-EXCEED FOUR YEARS.

DUTIES:  The incumbent conducts research and writing of a historical
nature relating to the life and times of Joseph Henry, the first Secretary
of the Smithsonian, and relating to the history of the Smithsonian.  The
incumbent conducts research and drafts annotations for The Papers of
Joseph Henry.  The incumbent interprets and evaluates historical data
within the framework of past and current historiography and establishes
historical facts.  The incumbent assists other staff in preparing The
Papers for publication.  The incumbent conducts research on the history of
the Smithsonian Institution.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Basic Qualifications for this position may be met in one
of the following three ways:

1.  Bachelor=s Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18
semester hours in history, and one year of specialized experience as a
Historian that is equivalent to the IS/GS-7 level in the federal service
or private sector;

2. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major
in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18
semester hours in history, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate
experience or additional education; and one year of specialized experience
as a Historian that is equivalent to the IS/GS-7 level in the federal
service or private sector;

3.  Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to
a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in the social
sciences or humanities may also be qualifying when such study included
training in historical research methodology; or the thesis approached the
subject from a historical viewpoint and used professional historical
research methodology and techniques in its preparation.

QUALITY RANKING FACTORS:  (These factors are not mandatory to be
considered for a position, but will be used to determine who are the
highest qualified candidates).  It is very important that you fully
address in a narrative statement how your work experience and
education/training meet these Quality Ranking Factors.

1. Knowledge of primary and secondary source material in nineteenth
century American history or history of American science.

2.  Ability to use primary source materials in preparing written
historical interpretations in American history or history of American
science.  (The Quality Ranking Factors are continued on page 2).

3.  Ability to use major research libraries and archives.

4.  Knowledge of spelling, grammar and proofreading symbols.

NOTE:  RELOCATION EXPENSES WILL NOT BE PAID.
