Position Announcement: Archivist, Rochester Institute of Technology



RIT Archivist

The RIT Library seeks a creative, service-oriented archivist to join a
dedicated team at a dynamic academic library in providing access to its
resources (paper and digital) by developing, managing and promoting the
RIT Archives.

The RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) Archives collects,
organizes, preserves and displays materials from the Institute's past.
It forms the primary source for the study of the history and development
of the Institute. The RIT Library Special Collections, housed within the
RIT Archives space, include a wide variety of published and unpublished
materials organized in distinct, but related collections, with greatest
strengths in graphic design and applied photography. The RIT Archives
and Special Collections Reading Room currently provides services to
nearly 1000 visitors per year.

The duties of the RIT Archivist consist of managing all archival
functions and the maintaining of its collections, providing regularly
scheduled reading room hours of service, creating a records management
system and managing Institute records, performing liaison work with
appropriate library staff and campus agencies and personnel that
stimulates and builds connections within the RIT community, creating
exhibits and websites that promote the Archives' holdings, creating
finding aids and catalog records for the Archives collection, pursuing
grants, providing reference desk service, and supervising one part-time
staff member and 3-4 student employees. For more information, please go

Requirements:

M.L.S. degree from an ALA-accredited program with emphasis on Archives
or professional experience with Archival Collections. Preferred: B.A. in
History.


1-2 years of professional archives work in a college or university
archives, including experience in:
--appraising, processing and describing paper-based records as well as
objects
--cataloging in MARC AMC and Encoded Archival Description (EAD)
--developing and presenting formal workshops and instruction
--developing exhibits and public programs
--utilizing computer applications, particularly those for web page
creation

Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to lift 20 to 30 lbs.


Salary and Benefits: high $40,000's, commensurate with experience.

Job Setting: Dynamic academic library with a great staff of 45 at a
progressive, technical university in upstate New York. Library services
approximately 15,100 students and 2,665 faculty/staff, maintains
