Historical Collections Assistant
(One-year Position for Flood Recovery of Manuscript Collections)
The Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library has an
opening for a full-time assistant in the John P. McGovern Historical
Collections & Research Center. The McGovern Center has unique
collections of manuscripts, serials, books, and photographs documenting
the history of healthcare. The person in this position will provide
clerical and technical support for the manuscript collections that are
being returned from the freeze-drying process. This will include
filing the archive's serial collections, labeling folders, typing box
labels, scanning documents, and searching the online catalog to assist
in processing the historical book collections. Some limited client
assistance will include pulling and shelving books or boxes of records,
photocopying rare materials, and monitoring use of the rare
collections, as needed.
This position requires two to three years of college (or equivalent
technical school/job experience) and excellent typing skills. Many of
the tasks require work at the keyboard of a computer or typewriter. The
shelving and filing tasks require accurate use of the English language
alphabet. Preference will be given to individuals with experience in
library work and with a bachelor's degree. The successful candidate
must be familiar with or learn to successfully use word processing
software, the scanning software, and the Library's online catalog
system. Training will be provided on scanning images. This position
requires careful attention to detail, ability to lift boxes (30-40
pounds) shoulder high for shelving archival boxes, moving materials on
carts between various sections of the McGovern Center, and a pleasant
manner when interacting with the clients.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Project Archivist
for the Flood Recovery Project and must be able to handle a variety of
complex tasks. Current McGovern Center projects include the
enhancement of its web page, scanning images of Texas hospitals,
development of a digital library on Texas medical history, processing
manuscript collections, and reference services to a varied clientele.

the United States. (Web address -- http://www.library.tmc.edu and
http://mcgovern.library.tmc.edu ) Located in the Texas Medical Center,

commensurate with experience. Fringe benefits include medical, dental
and life insurance. TIAA/CREF retirement plan is available.
