Online exhibit: Laboratorio Chimico (Lisboa University Museum of Science, Portugal)

Forwarded to STHC-L from _rete_. The discussion on that list was about
collections of chemicals in museums; the online exhibit may be of
particular interest to STHC-Lers for its recent and 19th
century photographs which document the history of a teaching laboratory
which saw uninterrupted use for over 150 years.

Dear Deborah,

The Museum of Science of the University of Lisbon has inherited the 19th
century chemistry laboratory of the former Polytechnics School (the
Museum is located in the P.School former building) and with it, the
equipment, chemistry instruments and the chemicals, used in the lessons
and in the research works that took place in the lab.
In April 1890 A.W. Hofmann visited the Laboratorio Chimico, in Lisbon,
and declared (in a published letter) that it was one of the best he knew
both for teaching and research. He saw it has a wonderful association of
elegance with funcionality.
The chemicals, mostly kept in the original bottles with the ancient
labels, are partly, in the inventory of the Museum, but we are
discovering now a lot more in

ancient cabinets and cases, as we are "cleaning" the old premises for
the restoration work which will take place soon. These important
historical collection from the 19th and early 20th centuries, will be
studied and shown to the visitors, in the original laboratory where the
students and teachers used to work, in the real atmosphere of the 19th
century.
