   Hoping that this will be of interest to some of you, I
would like to announce the

     13th International Conference
                      of the 
Society for the History of Natural History

         "Lost, Stolen, or Strayed:
The fate of missing natural-history collections"

              May 10-11, 2001.

             Naturalis Museum
          Leiden, the Netherlands

Discussing lost collections of specimens and
natural-history books & manuscripts, as well as the
retrieval and interpretation of what remains, speakers at
this conference are expected to include Christa Riedl-Dorn
on "Displaced documents - The strange fate of archive
materials and drawings of the Vienna Natural History
Museum," Florike Egmond on "Two little-known Dutch
manuscripts on natural curiosities," and Joy Kiser on the
lost scientific library of Hamilton L. Smith, among others.

Registration for the conference is L35 (UK pounds) for SHNH
members, L50 (UK pounds) for non-members. This includes
coffees, lunches, and an evening reception; the conference
dinner will be an additional charge when arrangements have
been finalized. There will be no conference housing per se;
information on moderately priced hotels is available. For
